Mobile Email Design: How to Make Emails Look Great on Every Screen

More than 60% of emails are opened on mobile devices, and that number keeps growing. If your emails are not designed for small screens, you are losing a large share of your audience before they even read a single word. Mobile-friendly email design is not a nice-to-have; it is essential for any serious email campaign.

Keep It Single Column

Multi-column layouts that look great on desktop become tiny and unreadable on phones. Use a single-column design so content stacks naturally on any screen. Keep your email width under 600 pixels and let images and text flow in one logical order.

Make Text Legible

Use a minimum font size of 14 pixels for body text and larger for headings. Small fonts force readers to zoom, and most people simply delete the email instead. Keep paragraphs short and line lengths comfortable, with generous spacing between sections.

Design for Thumbs, Not Cursors

People tap on phones, they do not hover. Make your call-to-action buttons at least 44 pixels tall and wide enough to tap easily. Leave space between buttons so users do not tap the wrong thing. Avoid tiny text links that are nearly impossible to hit.

Test on Real Devices

Preview your emails in different email clients and on multiple phone sizes before sending. Many platforms offer mobile previews, but nothing beats testing on a real device. Check that images load quickly and that nothing requires horizontal scrolling.
