WhatsApp Business API: Rules, Limits, and Costs Explained

What Is the WhatsApp Business API?

The WhatsApp Business API lets businesses send automated messages at scale through official providers, called Business Solution Providers. Unlike the free Business app, the API supports bulk notifications, chatbots, CRM integrations, and team inboxes shared by many agents.

The Key Rules You Must Know

  • Opt-in is mandatory — You may only message users who explicitly agreed to be contacted. Collect opt-in consent at the moment you capture the number.
  • 24-hour session window — You can send free-form messages only within 24 hours of the customer's last message. Outside this window you need an approved template.
  • Template approval — Business-initiated messages must use templates pre-approved by WhatsApp, reviewed for language and category.
  • No spam or promotional abuse — Accounts that receive high complaint rates risk suspension.

Understanding Costs and Limits

Pricing is per conversation, not per message, and differs by country and template category. Morocco benefits from lower rates than many Western markets, making WhatsApp a cost-effective channel for local businesses.

Each provider has its own limits, starting from 250 unique customers per day and scaling as you verify. Plan your rollout so you stay within limits while demand grows.
