E-Commerce Inventory Management for Small Stores: Stop Losing Money

For small online stores in Morocco, inventory mistakes are expensive. Overstocking freezes cash you could use for marketing. Understocking loses sales and frustrates customers who find your product out of stock. A simple system is all you need.

The Core Numbers to Track

  • Current stock: how many units you have today
  • Reorder point: the level at which you must order more
  • Lead time: how many days from order to product in your hands
  • Sales rate: how many units you sell per week on average

A Simple Reorder Formula

Reorder when your stock falls below: weekly sales × lead time in weeks + a safety buffer (usually one to two weeks of sales). For example, selling 20 units weekly with a two-week lead time means you reorder below 60 units, not when you're nearly empty.

Stock Control That Works

1. Use your platform's stock fields

WooCommerce, PrestaShop, and Shopify all track stock. Turn on stock management, set low-stock alerts, and update stock after every sale and every delivery.

2. One stock location

Keep inventory in one place and do a physical count every one to two weeks. Differences between system and reality are usually losses, damages, or missed updates.

3. Handle COD rejections

Returned or refused products must go back into stock the same day, or your numbers drift fast.

4. Mark low stock honestly

Moroccan buyers respect honesty. "Only 3 left" creates urgency only when it is true.

Seasonal Planning

Moroccan sales spike before Eid, Ramadan, and the end-of-year holidays. Plan purchases four to six weeks ahead of these peaks, and keep extra safety stock for the weeks they hit.
